An evergreen plant in the Mediterranean region – of long lifetime (there are olives that are older than 2.000 years – they are usually under conservation). The plant itself develops a trunk of irregular shapes while it-s bumpy and branchy. The leaves are oval and leathery, colored silverish-green. When the plant grows, it develops white flowers in clusters, while the olives are dark-green to black. Because of its firmness and resiststance, olive is a symbol of strength. It has been used for centuries as a nutritive, healing plant whose products are very healthy, respected, and therefore expensive. Unfortunately, the plant cannot survive in continental areas – it is necessary to place it in closed non-heated areas with much light during the winter. Today, you can buy seedlings, which are already formed trees (as in the picture) or older plants. The plants can hardly be multiplied by rooted cutting, so it is recommended that you buy the seedlings. The oldest olive tree in Croatia is in Kaštel Štafiliću. It is believed that it has been growing there since the Croatian arrival to the Adriatic Sea in the 7th century. It has impressive dimensions. Older olive trees are so beautiful that they can replace a sculpture. Because of its form and shape the plant can fit in very nicely into old, rustically decorated gardens, as well as into the modern parks in the Mediterranean.
